As per a resolution passed in September 2006 at the Nottingham University U21 Health Sciences meeting, a U21 Health Sciences UNMDG Interest group composed of members of the U21 consortium was formed. Further, a direct connection was made with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) Non-Government Organization section to organize a planning workshop in Geneva on August 2007. This workshop, attended by three members of the U21 group (Kendall Ho UBC, Niv Patil HKU, Martin Hernandez Tec de Monterrey), led to the development of a blueprint for U21 HS to work with UN DESA, AIFOMD, and International Association of Humanitarian Medicine (IAHM) to develop an educational strategy for UNMDG training for academic institutions in the U21 consortium.
This led to the realization of four UNMDG workshops in September 2008, February 2010, September 2010 and September 2011. At the 2008 U21 UNMDG Workshop held in Virginia, the U21 Health Sciences UNMDG Interest Group created a declaration stating their common interest in contributing to the attainment of the UNMDG goals and targets through education, knowledge translation, research, and partnership in relevant disciplines with communities, governments, and organizations.
